There is an extensive and comprehensive range of cost-effective and efficient motors available, to fulfil motor needs of products and applications around the world. So how do you select the correct motor for your project?

Firstly, approach a company that offers a motor selection service. Below are the steps that would be followed:

  • Advise the customer on the best type of motor for their application.
  • Size and select the right motor.
  • Provide the right motor for the application at the right price for the customer.
  • The customer either fills in a form or speaks to a customer service representative to discuss the details of the application for which the motor is needed. This might include what each axis will be doing, how it’s envisaged the motor will be operating and what the desired result of the motion is.
  • You will be advised of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of motor for the specific application.
  • Checks are also in place for the details of the customer’s preferred comms and control systems, to ensure that the selected motor will be able to integrate with other equipment.

Now there’s a good idea of the type of motor that is most appropriate, the physical aspects of each axis of the application can be considered.

  • All the details of the moving components in the application are noted; dimensions, materials, weight of components and weight of any load the machine will be moving, for example. The speed and motion profile in which the load will be moved are also factored in.
  • From this, the operating speed range required of the motor is calculated; the amount of torque needed for the motor to move the load at the required speeds, as well as the size of the inertia of the load and how this will affect the performance of the motor.
  • The customer can be confident they will have the most appropriate motor for their application in terms of specification. They will not have difficulties due to the motor not being sophisticated enough for the task, nor will they be paying unnecessarily for an over-specified motor.
  • The customer can be confident that the motor and driver chosen will integrate into their preferred control system without problems.
  • The motor will be the right size for their application. Not undersized, causing stalling issues and necessitating a redesign with a larger motor. Not oversized, taking up more space than necessary and adding excessive costs to the project.

Following these stages ensures that when a motor selection is complete and a recommendation is made, the customer can be confident that it's because it's the right motor for the job!
